Its been a while since I last wrote. Excuse- I simply haven't heard anything remotely worthy of recognition. At least that was the case until this August. Queue Delilah, and her debut album From the Roots Up.

Now to place Delilah in one singular category would be both inaccurate and restrictive. And what good would it do anyway? I like many others, appreciate that current music is not so black and white; a feature to be thankful for. Fusing different styles as happens in fashion, can produce something quite striking as is the case here.

Delilah is not just a Dubstep, Garage, or Blues artist but a combination of all three. Whether you keep her voice in the background or crank it up, the sound is equally convincing.

What I've come to understand about music lately is that an artist will not stand out for their good looks or album artwork alone. Today's society wants something more, provocation. And this singer-songwriter will do just that. From the sultry tone of her voice and longing of lyrics, to the dramatic visual manifestations of her art, Delilah will inevitably make you go 'OOH'.

It's not that I am disinterested by these subjects but conscious that most of what we read lately seems to impart a growing sense of doom.

Now being my optimistic 'there's always a solution to every problem' self, I am reluctant to believe that because of these issues, we cannot grow or achieve greatness. Yes it might be a little harder but it's certainly not impossible.

With that, we must seek ways to stay motivated and engaged. One of my methods is to listen to great music and this week my favorite pick-me-up is, 'We Found Love' by Jessie J...maybe she can inspire you too!

But what if you're not on a beach somewhere in the Med? Surely there must exist another sound that can evoke that summer sensation, and dare I say it, stay in our music psyches longer than the average 'summer anthem' . Well I believe I have the answer. His name is Benjamin Francis Leftwich.

I will not go into depth about a particular song of his but so far 'Atlas Hands', 'Box of Stones', and 'Pictures' are all of equal standing. With a warm almost haunting voice, his songs have the ability to take you away to those long summer evenings, walks in the park, over heated journeys, and my personal favorite-encounters with old and new friends.

So instead of jumping on board the traditional Ibiza themed playlist this summer, why not give into Benjamin's still hopeful, still dreamy tracks-as only winning summer tunes should be.

Well not anymore. Since hearing Jen's second latest track 'I'm Into You' from forthcoming album Love?, I feel I can say with absolute certainty that her comeback is more than mere fluke.

After the no.1 success of 'On The Floor' ft Pitbull, I have to admit that I wasn't sure of what to expect but thankfully it seems that marriage, the birth of twins and a stint as judge on American Idol have only served to empower this diva further.

In true J Lo style, the track incorporates provocative Latin sounds and even has visual references to Latin American culture with shots of Mexico's sacred Mayan ruins, the Kukulkan Pyramid at Chichen Itza. I think this blend of ancient and contemporary cultures gives the track particular potency. Other attractive aspects of the song include not so subtle word plays by the supporting rapper and of course a (too brief) dance section in which Lopez, as always, leaves the viewer wanting more!

'I'm Into You', with its love drenched lyrics, earthy colors, and of course beach front visuals is a perfect summer tune. So get this season under way and listen to 'I'm Into You' now:

If you haven't I suggest you familiarize yourself with him a.s.a.p. At least then I'll know I'm not the only one with his latest song-Lady Luck-playing over and over again in my head! The track from his debut album mirrorwriting, set for release on April 11th, is quite frankly the sh*t.

Even though it would be insufficient to describe the song with words, I will say this. There is something almost therapeutic or spiritual about it.
Flying the flag for the UK music industry, this multi-million record selling songstress reminds me why I listen to music-to connect, be it with myself, friends, family or even strangers.

The emotion seeping from Adele's voice and inextricably woven into her lyrics is enough to strike a chord in the steeliest of characters. With every song, she lays bare a bit of her soul, and the result painful or not is also the obtainment of top chart hits.

What can we learn from this? Even if it is hard, giving flight to emotions will culminate in eventual success.

I would like then to dedicate this post to Adele, who in her courageous musical pursuits, teaches us to embrace all that life brings be it good or bad.

Although this may seem like an impossibility given today's climate of celebrity fanaticism, which more often than not puts looks and controversial behaviour before the individual's professional merits, I may have found a man who does throw caution to the wind in this sense and you have permission to sue me if you think otherwise! His name is James Blake, a 22-year-old Londoner who mixes electronica with soul drenched vocals culminating in a subliminal sound more in keeping with the work of a big black man than a skinny white boy.

Whether you have heard his name or not, you can rest assured that by the end of 2011 you will have something to say about the indomitable force that is James Blake.

What do I mean by lost? I’m referring to our inherent lack of appreciation for the simple things. The result of which is a plaguing dissatisfaction, either with ourselves and/or others.

With images of the ideal being thrust upon us night and day, can we blame ourselves for continually seeking more?

Perhaps not. But then again how do we expect to find and enjoy the elusive ‘more to life’ when we have stopped valuing the simplest of things which were necessary for their inception?

What’s needed is to get back to basics, unveil the senses and receive things as if it were the first time. Perhaps then and only then we will realize what’s right in front of us; something or somebody amazing just the way they are!

Now seeing that I will not have the opportunity to frequent any of these musical feasts, I have decided to write about a band which inspires festival spirit at its most toxic-Florence and the Machine.

The band's seventh and final single-Cosmic Love- from album Lungs is set for release July 5th, 2010. It is in my opinion the most magical track to emerge from this eclectic group.

Interpreting the lyrics, vocalist Florence Welch admitted that the track relates being in love to falling into darkness; almost voluntarily blinding yourself.

Not having been in love myself, I realise I cannot speak authoritatively on the subject. However, if I were to hazard a guess at what love might incite, I could bet that elements of uncontrollability and devastation-as are prominent in the song's lyrics-would surely feature.

Still unsure of what Florence means? Think Stephenie Meyer's vampire character Edward Cullen and his love obsession, the mere mortal Bella Swan.

Although the lyrics may seem a little heavy for some, the accompaniment of hypnotic harp strings and pounding drums ensure that you never feel downbeat.

If that wasn't enough to convince you of the song's power, look no further than its art house style video. Between a light-up dress, mirrored walls and fallen leaves, it is eccentricity at its best!

The simple fact is that after twenty years in the business her music can still rival those half her age and her perfectly sculpted body is well, perfect.

The track itself underlines the Aussie's undiminishing presence as key player in the pop arena, whilst allowing for growth in alternate genres with the incorporation of electronic even trance like beats. The lyrics, touchy feely as they may be, are nonetheless irritatingly catchy inciting an air of change, hope and expectation.

As for the video, it's like stepping into a collaborative ad between GAP and Dove where age, gender, race and religion are neither here nor there. Regardless of its somewhat fantastical aspect; a naked human pyramid which stands swaying in downtown LA, an inflatable flying elephant and a galloping white horse this video is as real as it is raw and as such unmissable.
Unfortunately, short of Tarantino-esq visuals and multiple identity changes, Video Phone by Beyonce (ft Lady Gaga) falls short musically.

What starts out as a curious fusion of electro and hip-hop soon becomes a monotonous drone. While the lyrics as I interpret them boarder on meaningless, something quite rare for both performers.

Each with singing, playing and composition ability marked by the numerous musical accolades to their names, I like many other fans expected something exceptional from these two.

I can only hope that this track was a minor glitch in the musical history of Beyonce/Gaga-ville and that forthcoming material will again bring to forefront their musical talent, which needs only to be heard and not viewed.

The jazz singer who originally made his mark with covers spanning Sinatra to Eric Clapton has recently released a new album. Loaded with classic covers and an array of fresh material it doesn't disappoint.

With Valentine’s Day drawing imminently closer, I am noticing more and more the induction of slushy love album purchases. The sad thing is that on any other day of the year such music would stimulate the gag reflex rather than the 'I love you' one.

Most of the time we can all agree that love is pain but on Valentine’s Day society at large feels obliged to listen to music which romanticises the concept.

Instead of doing that I want to present Cry Me A River, a song from Bublé's latest album which reflects for me the more obvious reality of this thing we call love.

With its dramatic big band beats and venge seeking lyrics it all at once encapsulates the notion of love that exists for many of us today. This however is by no means something to be ashamed of. In fact I believe it may have been Bublé's very own love traumas which propelled him from the boy we knew before to the man that stands before us now and let me say he's quite a man!

So for those of you in a relationship or no relationship at all stop being pressured to meet the fantasy love of those Valentine’s playlists and remember a little heartache might not be such a bad thing after all.

Well I did and it came as quite a surprise to me. Admittedly this 'bad' thing wasn't exactly punishable by death, far from it actually. Yet I still hate myself for it or do I.

Before you jump to any assumptions, I will explain what happened and no I didn't steal or cheat. I simply listened to Ke$ha's Tik Tok on repeat. Is that really so bad?

For anyone with the slightest taste and know-how in music it should be deemed unforgivable, regardless of its no.1 US chart position.

I mean you couldn't find a more shallow lyric if you tried. And what about the artist herself, she's glorifying unlawfulness, disobedience and promiscuity. What a no.1!

The fact of the matter is however much I try to convince myself of the song's inadequacy, I only seem to fuel my obsession further. Right now I cannot go 24 hours without pressing play, does that make me an addict?

I guess until I have another love-to-hate pop track Tik Tok will continue to be my guilty pleasure. So please shhhh, I won't tell if you don't!

These are just some of the words that spring to mind when thinking of Lady Gaga's latest endeavour, 'Bad Romance'.

What strikes me most is how the track captures my generation's attitude toward love and romance, if you can even call it that!

Somehow we are no longer in love with being in love, rather the feeling of addiction that this love incites. And why? Because it's more compelling. Well at least for some of us!

'I want your ugly
I want your disease
I want your everything
As long as its free

I want your love and
I want your revenge
You and me could write a bad romance
I want your love and
All your lovers' revenge
You and me could write a bad romance'

With clarity of expression this defined and more to the point true, it's sad to think how little we've seen of this pop demon.

Lady Gaga aka Stefani Germanotta brings to popculture what Alexander McQueen brings to the fashion world, daredevilry.

By pushing boundries, in this case social and cultural, this eccentric artist unconsciously liberates us from the chains of society's expectant voice. This in turn allows us to manifest our own desires however perverse they may be.

So the next time you think that Lady Gaga is one step short of entering a mental institution or whore house, take a closer look at what her work represents. You might just be surprised at what you find.

So we all know Shakira for the fiery Latino she is but if it's humanly possible her latest track 'She Wolf' or 'La Loba' demonstrates a sexiness that would surpass any previous ideals we may have held.

After obsessing about her return to the music scene with fervent memories of previous material including 'Hips Don't Lie' and 'La Tortura', I suppose I had an exceedingly high expectation. But then again, don't you think high expectations are necessary to drive success? (Maybe that's just me) Fortunately in this case, my line of thought paid off.

Not only are the lyrics incessantly catchy but they actually hold significant meaning unlike other chart toppers which speak of: bitches, Ho's and million dollar bills! She Wolf is about the sexual repression of women and the desires they have to move past this age old concept into a sphere of sexual liberation and fulfilment.

With her ever engaging strength and sensuality, Shakira is most certainly back with us. For those of you who knew her before, I'm sure you will be happy to see that the dance sequences in this video are reminiscent of those in Beautiful Liar, the duet she did with Beyonce aka Sasha Fierce.

If I had to find one criticism and in honesty I only have one, it would be that the Colombian beauty has lost too much weight. The hips that we once knew seem to have vanished somewhere along line making me feel somewhat uneasy. Lets not forget, it was those hips and curvy outline that once separated her from others.

At the end of the day I'm not here to judge her physical appearance; this is a music blog after all. So lets get back to the matter in hand, if you're looking for an artist with undeniable talent and originality, it's Shakira(the she wolf).

Here's to her reincarnation, let her new album be every bit as worthy as this single.
The Queen of Pop, our Madonna, reigns again. And no, I am not kidding....

So she's 51, should that spell the end of her career? Many might think so but I am here to stand up for all women and say that age should bare no relevance if talent still prevails and jeez, when it comes to Madge it clearly does.

In her latest music video, Celebrando we see her dancing like a twenty something with nothing more than a mini dress and knee high boots! Does it work? Of course it does. Supported by a fabulous group of dancers, Madge sings or should I say talks in that provocative manner which would get even my goldfish to stand to attention!

So there it is, a perfect demonstration that age is nothing more that a number. If you feel alive and if you feel free, in the words of Madonna, "Come join the party."
There I was, standing in the crowd, perhaps no more than a metre from the stage. At the time I remember thinking how stark the stage was for a music concert. Usually they're adorned with a glaring backdrop at very least. But no, not this time. And so it began, the most electrictrifying concert I've seen to date.
I am referring to the works of Rodrigo Y Gabriela, a duo from Mexico City who arm themselves with nothing but acoustic guitars.
The sounds they produced seemed to me nothing short of superhuman. Their energy filtered through the guitars penetrating the audience, which became at once a slave to the rhythms.
Although this concert was almost two years ago, I am still in awe of the duo and continue to follow their music affairs.
They are returning to London this Autumn. My advice, 'hunt down some tickets now.'
To miss Rodrigo Y Gabriela, is to miss being in the presence of true musicians.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lvMQCmUVv8Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9002782274778203248.post-2266958318365070532009-08-15T03:29:00.000-07:002009-08-15T11:02:30.093-07:00More than surpriseWhat can I say?
Last night, for the first time in a long time, I found myself lost for words.
For what reason you may ask. Their names are Damien and Tourie Escobar, a pair of brothers from New York City.
Ok but there are many brothers living in NYC right. What makes these two so different? I'll give you two words classical and contemporary.
That's right, two men with violins fusing delicate and technical classical music with jagged sounds of hip hop.
Its not just their flawless technique that shines through but a passion and emotion that comes from the inner depths of their being. To witness their performance was and is a truly inspiring and core wrenching experience. One that I hope more people will be able to realise.

Apart from appreciating Damien and Tourie's talent(Nuttin But Stringz), it struck me how deceiving appearances can be and to what extent we judge people based on looks alone. I wonder how many would have branded Damien and Tourie rap star wannabees before anything else!

Here's to Damien and Tourie, a pair that follwed their dream and in the course challenged music concepts and the concepts of people.

Follow link to hear Damien and Tourie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S3WtJYgy1Q&feature=relatedUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9002782274778203248.post-9801757073435314872009-08-12T15:50:00.000-07:002009-08-14T04:56:12.219-07:00The Unexpected Hit....Who am I talking about?
You all know it deep down but through fear of social reproach are unwilling to utter the name!
That's right, Im referring to Peter Andre's latest but not necessarily long awaited new track-Behind Closed Doors.
After having watched some footage of Peter in the recording studio, I will be the first to admit that I didn't see this going well. However, the renowned celebrity Dad and ex husband of Katie Price might actaully have made a name for himself with this material.
The track's lyrics are gritty and really convey a sense of Pete's own feelings; its nice to know some celebrities allow themselves to be vulnerable, drawing strength from their imperfections or an imperfect situation. It just goes to show, we're all human! The success is not just in the lyrics but the beat too. The overall sound being a fusion of pop, rock and Rnb. (A perfect club track if you ask me)
So, to those of you who wouldn't dream of listening to and enjoying a song by Pete, I ask you to do the following. Disregard what you think you know about him and his music and take a chance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BGcYMCpEmoUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0
